Ethics and Code of Conduct: My Approach as a Coach

As a coach, I understand that ethics and code of conduct are not separate from my practice—they are embedded in how I think, how I show up, and how I relate to my clients. Guided by the principles of COMENSA, I see ethical coaching as an ongoing commitment to integrity, self-awareness, responsibility, and continuous development.

I approach coaching with a foundation of honesty and integrity. I take care to represent my qualifications, experience, and capabilities accurately, and I avoid making unrealistic promises about outcomes. I recognise that coaching is not about providing answers or directing clients, but about creating a space where they can think, reflect, and make their own decisions. Where I am uncertain, I am willing to acknowledge this. Where something falls outside my scope, I take responsibility to address it appropriately, including referring the client to another professional when necessary.

A central aspect of my ethical practice is maintaining clear professional boundaries. I am conscious of the distinction between coaching and other disciplines such as therapy, counselling, or consulting. I aim to remain within the scope of coaching and to recognise when additional or alternative support is required. I also remain aware of potential conflicts of interest and manage them transparently to ensure that the client’s wellbeing remains the priority.

I treat confidentiality as fundamental to the coaching relationship. I respect the trust that clients place in me by protecting their information and maintaining privacy at all times, except where disclosure is required by law or where there is a risk of harm. I also take responsibility for the secure handling and storage of any client-related information.

My ethical responsibility extends deeply into self-awareness and the management of my internal state. I recognise that I am shaped by my own culture, experiences, and systems, and that these inevitably influence how I listen and respond. Rather than attempting to eliminate bias, I focus on becoming aware of it and ensuring it does not unconsciously direct the coaching process. When thoughts, assumptions, or emotional reactions arise, I aim to notice them, pause, and choose how I respond in service of the client.

In working with clients, I am mindful of the interaction between my system and the client’s system. Each client operates within a broader context that includes cultural, social, economic, and relational influences. Particularly within the South African context, I recognise the importance of diversity, inclusion, and cultural humility. I aim to remain open and curious about the client’s world, especially where it differs from my own, and I avoid assuming shared meaning or imposing my perspective. I seek to understand the client within their context, not separate from it.

I am also committed to managing myself effectively in service of the client. This includes how I prepare before sessions, how I remain present during sessions, and how I reflect afterwards. I aim to show up physically, mentally, and emotionally prepared, with a clear intention to serve rather than to perform. During sessions, I work to regulate my pace, manage my emotions, and remain responsive rather than reactive. After sessions, I take time to reflect, separate what belongs to me from what belongs to the client, and ensure that I maintain my own wellbeing.

Maintaining emotional, mental, and physical wellbeing is an essential part of my ethical responsibility. I recognise that my ability to support clients is directly influenced by my own state. I therefore take steps to ensure that I am grounded and resourced, and I seek support when needed. This includes engaging in supervision or mentoring as a space to process my experiences, explore challenges, and develop greater awareness.

I view ongoing development as a core ethical obligation. Coaching practice continues to evolve, and I am committed to growing both professionally and personally. This includes engaging in reflective practice, seeking feedback, staying informed about best practices, and developing awareness of related disciplines. I also recognise the growing role of technology in coaching and take responsibility for engaging with it thoughtfully and appropriately, ensuring that it enhances rather than detracts from the coaching relationship.

In my work, I prioritise client autonomy and empowerment. I respect the client’s right to make their own decisions, even when those decisions differ from my own views. I aim to remain non-attached to outcomes and to trust the client’s capacity for growth and change. My role is to support their thinking, not to influence it toward a particular direction.

Finally, I recognise my responsibility to the profession. I aim to conduct myself in a way that reflects positively on coaching and aligns with the standards of COMENSA. This includes maintaining ethical standards, engaging respectfully with others, and being open to accountability. I understand that ethical practice is not static, but requires continuous reflection, humility, and a willingness to evolve.

In conclusion, my approach to ethics and code of conduct is grounded in awareness, responsibility, and ongoing growth. By aligning my practice with the principles of COMENSA, I aim to create a coaching space that is safe, respectful, and empowering, while also continuing to develop as a coach and as a person.
